In the first issue over 65 years ago, Sagendorph stated that the magazine's mission was the 'expression and, perhaps indirectly, the preservation of our New England culture.' The mission has not changed.
Each month, Yankee's editorial fare attempts to define that unique regional culture through its features on current events and people, historical articles, beautiful photographs and art, humor, fiction, poetry, and informative features on New England travel, homes, cooking, gardening, antiques, crafts, and just plain country living.To a European or Asian, a Yankee is an American; to a southern American, a Yankee is a Northerner; to a Northerner, a Yankee is a New Englander; to a New Englander, a Yankee is a Vermonter; to a Vermonter, a Yankee is a person who eats apple pie for breakfast; to a Vermont person who eats apple pie for breakfast, a Yankee is someone who eats it with a knife.But the truth is that most Americans have some 'Yankee' in them.
